My initial thoughts are that the prices are way too high. Add to that the VAT is being increased back to 17.5% in January and they will be even more expensive. Just about any of the mid or high end cards will be quicker than your existing 8800. DirectX 11 is now out inside Windows 7 but isn't a reason on its own to buy a DX11 card. Nvidia don't currently have any DX11 cards in production but that will change early in the new year.

A little while back when I was having trouble with my GTX280-OC over heating I looked at the new ATI 5870's. They were around 200 ish then. Now they are 340 ! Luckily I managed to remove the IHS and reapply some fresh thermal compound which has cured the heat problems.

If I were to buy a card today it would be an ATI 5870. Second would be an ATI 5850. Not sure I'd bother with the 5770, cheap as it may be. I'd give the 5970 a miss too, Crossfire can be a pain in the butt and isn't fully supported by all games. ATI have had major problems supplying these new cards and there was a period of around a month where it was next to impossible to find one in stock anywhere. Things have improved slightly but they are still scarce.

The Nvidia cards are also expensive at the moment. The GTX280 is no longer made and the slightly newer GTX285 is about to go End of Line. I am currently waiting to see what the next gen Nvidia cards will be like before deciding on a new one.

Thanks Don, not sure what to do now, my current card is slowly heading to the grave, might try and wait a bit to see what comes around in the NY but only want to pay about 150 anyway.

Thanks again

Take a look at the following link. Read the writing at the top of the page as it is the instructions on how to properly use the advisor.

If your only choice was from the two cards you've listed in the last post then I would have to say the 5770 only because of the Directx 11 support. Neither are at the top of the current graphics card performance list but both offer similar peformance for a low-mid video card.

Who did you order from?

I know that Overclockers, like many, have had stock issues with the 5850 and 5870 cards. There is quite a list of people waiting and some wait a very long time. 'tis a good card by all accounts though.

Price seems good but I don't think I'd bother waiting 3 weeks.
